Anyone who wants to import MSG to Google Workspace quickly hits a major roadblock. That is the absence of any native way to upload the files directly into the G Suite admin account.

That’s why people look for secondary methods that often involve subjecting their data to a file conversion and using desktop-based email clients.

This lack of support for such a simple request is surprising to see, especially for a tech behemoth like Google. Don’t worry, we have you covered.

In this post, we cover what you need to do if you want to add the emails to the Google Workspace account. Tell you what to watch out for and offer a proven method for IT admins inside organizations that may need to perform this process for thousands of accounts.

Let us start off by listing out the reasons why it’s necessary to bring MSG files into G Suite.

Reasons to Import MSG to Google Workspace

There are a lot of valid reasons why users may want to add these emails, which are in “.msg”  format, into Google’s cloud platform. Some of them are listed below.

To make the MSG data usable. On their own, the orphan .msg files are not very useful. They are like any other offline archive data, but with very limited support. So to make this stagnant data active, users add it to their Google Workspace account.

Another reason could be to visualize the email in a proper environment. MSG data can be opened with text viewers like Notepad, but the data is jumbled. It’s very difficult to find the actual content between all of the metadata. By pushing these files onto an email platform, it becomes easy to make sense of what is in the files.

When you are transitioning from some other platform to Google Workspace, you may have to place many email archives inside G Suite accounts. These archives often include MSG files.

Now that we have covered the “Why,” let’s move on to the “How.”

How to Import MSG to Google Workspace Manually?

You have to perform a 3-stage process to complete this task

First, enable IMAP. These are administrator-level steps

  • Log in to the Google Workspace Console
  • Select Apps > Google Workspace > Gmail > End User Access
  • Under the POP and IMAP section, enable IMAP for all users.

These steps are redundant for personal accounts, as they are IMAP by default.

Then turn on 2-step verification and create an app password.

  • Go to Google Account security settings.
  • Click on 2-Step Verification and follow the on-screen steps to enable it if it’s not already on.
  • Once enabled, go back to the security page and click on App passwords. You may need to sign in again.
  • Under “Select app,” choose Mail.
  • Under “Select device,” choose Windows Computer.
  • Click Generate.
  • A 16-character password will be generated. Copy this password now, as you won’t be able to see it again. You will use this password in the Outlook setup instead of your regular Google password.
